[ History ] :
Mewtwo’s history differs from most other Pokemon who have been placed in the same “Legendary” tier. This is mostly because where other “Legendary” Pokemon have mystical and fantasy-like creation stories surrounding their birth, such as the god-like Arceus creating Dialga and Palkia, while Mewtwo is a wholly man-made creation. That is not to say that he is the first or only man-made Pokemon; Porygon was created from computer program, and other Pokemon like Trubbish where created through human pollution. What sets Mewtwo apart from them is that he is classified as a “Legendary” Pokemon because of his incredible power, regardless of the fact that he did not come in to the world through the classic means associated with other “Legendaries”.
His story starts long before he was “born” with a team of researchers exploring the jungles of South America. These scientists where funded by the nefarious Team Rocket, a crime ring that specializes in using (and misusing) Pokemon to get what they want. The scientists may not have know it was Team Rocket who was funding their expedition, because they are never mentioned by name save for their leader Giovanni, who is both seen and talked about by them. In any case, the research team had the resources and support needed to advance their life’s work; Cloning living organisms.
In the jungle the scientists found what they were searching for. While it was only a tiny fragment, they discovered the fossilized remains of the mysterious Legendary Pokemon known as Mew. They were able to extract a sample of Mew’s DNA and begin creation of a clone specifically for their patron Giovanni. But Giovanni did not just want a living clone of Mew, he wanted them to make the copy even more powerful than the original. The scientists seemed to gladly rise to the challenge even as they would find that manipulating the DNA would make it highly unstable and their first few attempts would fail.
Mewtwo was not the only clone in progress at the lab, as simultaneously there where experiments being conducted on the DNA of other Pokemon and even human DNA. These other clones where also being enhanced to be better than the original, to the point that all of their developing consciousnesses where able to form a psychic link of sorts between themselves. This manifested as a sort of dream world where Mewtwo and the other Pokemon clones (Which where a Bulbasaur, a Charmander, and a Squirtle) could interact with each other and the human clone, a little girl named Amber. They all became fast friends, but their time together was tragically cut short as all the clones other than Mewtwo destabilized and died. This obviously upset and left an impression on the still developing Mewtwo although he never mentions it later in life, which leads one to assume the memory was somehow suppressed or erased.
Later, as the only surviving clone, Mewtwo would come to full consciousness and be “born”. When he was finally aware of his surroundings, he instinctively broke the holding tube he was in with his psychic power. The scientists where startled, but ecstatic that their experiment has finally yielded promising results, unaware to the coming danger. They did not realize that Mewtwo had not been dormant during his development, but had dreamed the entire time and questioned his existence; Who was he? Why was he here? What was his purpose? The scientists where too caught up in their excitement to step back and think about how they had brought a sentient and highly intelligent being into existence. The head researcher continually referred to Mewtwo as an object, as simply a lab rat to be contained and studied, and this threw the newly born Pokemon into a destructive rage. Mewtwo razed the lab in his anger and killed the scientists who had created him.
For the moment his anger was placated, but the big question still remained. Why was he created? And at this opportune moment Giovanni stepped in. He approached Mewtwo not as someone who would try to own him, but as an equal who could help him realize his true destiny. Looking for answers and having no better place to turn to, Mewtwo agreed to go with him back to Team Rocket’s headquarters in the Viridian City Pokemon Gym. Giovanni outfitted Mewtwo with a special armor that suppressed but focused his power. Mewtwo was skeptical of the armors use and how it would show him the purpose of his life, but Giovanni answered his misgivings with a cryptic message that all would become clear in time. And for a while, Mewtwo worked under Giovanni, defeating opponents coming to the gym and even helping Team Rocket to commit crimes.
But this “partnership” with Giovanni would not last. Mewtwo’s purpose has still not become clear to him, and when he confronted Giovanni about it, the answers he got where not at all what he expected. Giovanni said that his purpose was to serve humans, because he was created by humans and because he was a Pokemon. Giovanni also claimed ownership over Mewtwo and said that he was his master. Mewtwo could not abide by this and enraged by the idea of being a tool for humans, he fled, destroying most of the Viridian Pokemon Gym on his escape.
Mewtwo then returned to his birthplace. Among the abandoned wreckage of the lab he had torn to the ground, he decided he would pursue his own goals from this point forward. And his goal was simple; To rid the world of humans and Pokemon alike so that clones like himself would have a place to exist as the superior race. Mewtwo rebuilt the lab and the cloning technology and improved upon it, creating an entire castle-like complex to be his base of operations. But he was left with a roadblock very early on.
The only Pokemon DNA he had other than himself was the other samples the scientists had been experimenting with; Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. How was he to create clones without other DNA? And so he devised a plan to get top Pokemon trainers to come to his island so he could take samples of their Pokemon’s DNA. Mewtwo kidnapped a Nurse Joy from a coastline Pokemon Center and mind controlled her to be his “human” face to greet visitors to his fortress. Next he sent out invitations to any and all potential trainers that caught his eye, informing them that the greatest Pokemon trainer alive wanted an audience with them. Finally, he used his psychic powers to create a storm that would make passage to his island nearly impossible. Mewtwo did this to purposely allow only the strongest trainers and strongest Pokemon into his complex. After he had collected the DNA from the Pokemon, his plan was to then allow the storm to destroy all life on Earth and leave it as a haven for him and his clones.
Mewtwo’s plan ran smoothly for the first part. A group of trainers braved the storm and where led into the complex by the brainwashed Nurse Joy, and they were completely fooled in to believing they were here for nothing more than a Pokemon battle. Mewtwo then revealed himself to them, relaying his intentions and his self imposed titles as the world’s strongest Pokemon and the world’s strongest trainer. Of course, the trainers gathered there did not believe Mewtwo, and challenged him to a Pokemon battle. He agreed, and called forth his improved clone versions of Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise to battle against the challengers natural versions. The clones won easily due to their genetically enhanced nature and Mewtwo claimed the rest of the trainers Pokemon as his victory prize.
In the chaos that ensued in when Mewtwo was capturing the trainers Pokemon, one of the trainers managed to get deep within the complex to where the cloning machine was. This trainer, named Ash, was determined to get his long time partner, a Pikachu, back from Mewtwo. He did retrieve his Pikachu and in the process broke the cloning machine, releasing the rest of the captured Pokemon. Although the Pokemon had already been cloned and their copies had joined Mewtwo, Ash led the originals back to the stadium to confront him. This human trainer rashly tried to take on Mewtwo by himself, charging at the super powered clone again and again only to be thrown back by his psychic attacks. One such attack might have gravely injured or even killed Ash, if Mew had not intervened at that moment to prevent him from crashing into a stone wall.
Mew had been investigating the fortress since about the same time that the trainers had arrived. It had not made itself known until this point because it was a curious and playful being by nature, preferring to go for rides on the windmills being used to power the complex rather than get involved in all the fighting. It seemed to draw the line however at senseless loss of life, and it now came to lecture Mewtwo about how his view on the world was all wrong. Power doesn’t come from the circumstances of one’s birth, because true power comes from the heart. Mewtwo violently disagreed. Intent on proving that his power and the abilities of the clones where far superior, he challenged Mew to a fight between all of them. He would block the special attacks of both the cloned Pokemon and the originals, so they would only be able to fight with physical strengths. Then he and Mew would unleash their full power on one another to determine once and for all which was better. Mew accepted.
The ensuing battle between the clones and the originals was grueling and heart breaking. Neither side truly had an advantage over the other, but it was clear that they would all fight hard and to the death. All of the Pokemon struggled against each other to the point of exhaustion, save for Ash’s Pikachu, who refused to take part even as it’s clone repeatedly attacked it. Looking on this hopeless scene, Ash once again sought to intervene and put a stop to the fighting. As he plunged headlong into the fray, Ash was caught in the crossfire of Mew and Mewtwo’s psychic attacks. The combination of these two powerful energies had a devastating effect on him and he was turned to stone. Mewtwo scorned Ash’s seemingly foolish actions.
Pikachu valiantly attempted to revive its trainer, by calling to him and even resorting to electrocuting him, but it was of little use. The only thing Pikachu could do was weep openly at the loss. In turn, both the original and clone Pokemon sympathized with tragic event and shed their own tears of sadness. This outpouring of shared pain lead to a miraculous event- the combined tears of all of the Pokemon, cloned or otherwise, restored Ash back to normal.
This display of emotion and empathy moved Mewtwo. The self sacrifice of a human for the sake of Pokemon, and the Pokemon’s sorrow at the ensuing loss showed him how very wrong his view of the world had been up to that point. After realizing this, Mewtwo ended his campaign against all other e forms of life. He stopped the storm that was to ravage the earth, erased the memories of the trainers and Pokemon who had come to the island, and departed with the clones to find a place where they could live in peace. The laboratory on the island was taken down, and all those involved in the incident found themselves safely back in civilization with no recollection of the event.
Mewtwo and his clones settled deep within a remote region where humans rarely ventured. For a time, they lived on the top of a nearly unreachable mountain paradise, undisturbed by the rest of the world. But Mewtwo had forgotten that not everyone was ignorant of his existence. Giovanni, who had ordered his creation, still wanted to control and use Mewtwo’s power.
Ironicaly, while Giovanni and Team Rocket are moving in to recapture Mewtwo, the trainer Ash is forced into the same area in search of his partner Pikachu. The two were separated when an off shoot of Team Rocket , the bumbling trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth, attempted to yet again steal Pikachu. Ultimately they failed, but this brought Ash and his friends to the mountain peak to search for Pikachu, and in turn Pikachu was found by its clone counterpart. The cloned Pikachu is angry that the original has come here with humans, and it tries to attack it. Mewtwo does not allow this to happen, as he knows now that fighting would be senseless, and takes Ash’s Pikachu in with his clones temporarily.
Here it is revealed that not all of the cloned Pokemon are content to live in secrecy and seclusion. The cloned Pikachu is the biggest voice of dissent, as it is jealous of the fact that the originals can go anywhere they want and live their lives however they please. This Pikachu does not want to stay tied to one place because they are unwelcome elsewhere and it does not want to be forced to move to another hiding place should they be discovered. Mewtwo is left with a dilemma when the Pikachu and some of the other clones make to leave to forge their own paths in the world. He has the power to stop them from leaving, and the power to keep them safe by his side. But he does not know which is more important, their safety, or their happiness and freedom.
Regardless of the turmoil within the ranks of the clones, Giovanni and Team Rocket have moved in to capture all of them. Giovanni targets the clones who are attempting to leave first, knowing that Mewtwo’s loyalty to his own kind will cause him to intervene, which he indeed does. Mewtwo tells him to leave and warns that his powers are far greater than when he and Giovanni had last met. Giovanni retaliates with special orb-like machines that are intended to entrap Mewtwo. The machines seem to be easily put out of commission by Mewtwo, and Giovanni moves the battle to the island in the middle of a lake where the rest of the clones are living.
In reality, this is all a part of Giovanni’s intricate plan. The machines he brought where not actually heavily damaged by Mewtwo’s attacks, and by moving the battle to the island, Giovanni could then use the other clones as hostages to force Mewtwo to submit. His ploy works and Mewtwo surrenders himself to Giovanni to protect the other Pokemon. The machines Mewtwo had dispatched before are meant not only to capture him, but to break him so that Giovanni may utterly control him. Mewtwo fights against him but it seems to be a battle he cannot win.
Meanwhile, the captured clone Pokemon are rounded up by Team Rocket and are joined by other prisoners of the evil organization- Ash and company where also taken captive when Team Rocket found them wandering about the island in search of Pikachu. Ash’s Pikachu is with the clones, and they are reunited at long last. The trainers also find out here that the water from the spring that feeds the lake is not only pure and untouched but it also has healing powers. As both Pikachu’s where hurt in Team Rockets attack, one of the human companions gives them water from the spring, and they seem to fully recover from their injuries.
Ash, his friends, and all the Pokemon have their chance to escape when the Pokemon who live in the surrounding area directly attack Team Rocket. The organization had already started building a base of operations while Giovanni was entrapping Mewtwo, and the resulting pollution incurred the wrath of those native to the area. Ash and company come across the still struggling Mewtwo, and Ash is determined to help him. Unfortunately the machines are too well built to be affected by anything the group of humans can throw at them so Mewtwo makes a last bid at freedom by throwing all of his power at them. It works, but he pays a heavy price for it, as his body is mortally wounded in the process. An idea hits them at that moment to bring Mewtwo to the spring, because perhaps the mystical healing properties of the water would help him like it helped the Pikachu’s.
Giovanni predictably attempts to stop them, claiming that Mewtwo was his property and only he had the power of life or death over the Pokemon. However two other trainers along with the clones and the native Pokemon hold him off long enough so that Ash can escape with the injured Mewtwo. Mewtwo is confused as to why a human is helping him, and Ash replies that one doesn’t always need a reason to help someone. This will again change Mewtwo’s perception as humans, as he recognizes Ash as “unique” amongst his kind and as wholly different from the people who had attacked them.
The spring water not only has the desired effect of saving Mewtwo’s life, but it gives him the power boost he needs to defy Giovanni one last time. When Giovanni comes to the spring looking for him, Mewtwo unleashes his powers to completely remove Team Rocket’s presence from the lake and the mountain, and to relocate the purifying spring underground where it cannot be found and abused. As a final act to ensure peace for himself and the other clones, he erases the memories of both Giovanni and all of Team Rocket. This time however Ash and company get to keep their memories of the event, and the last they see of Mewtwo is him and the clones departing to live their own lives in the world.
[ Personality ] :
Mewtwo is not a straight forward villain, nor has he been redeemed as a crusader for good. He has the potential and the tendency for explosive outbursts of violence, but he also has the conscious mind to be self sacrificing for others. Mewtwo is very much governed by emotions and personal goals, as all of his actions up to this point have been direct reactions to what he was feeling at the time. His anger toward humanity in creating him and then using him as an object is what propelled him to attempt to make his own world, and his despair in never being accepted by humans or other Pokemon is what caused him to break away from the rest of the world. Mewtwo is still bitter about all of this, and it shows in the way he interacts with anyone who isn’t a clone.
He has a hard time seeing any good in the vast majority of humans, and is by default deeply distrustful of them. Mewtwo has seen firsthand how greed and ambition brings out the worst in the people who claim to be “friends” of Pokemon and he wants absolutely nothing to do with them. He avoids human contact at all costs, and when forced to interact with them, he is cold and aloof. Although he is also aware of humanity’s potential for good, it takes a lot to convince him that an individual falls into that category. Mewtwo also steers clear of other Pokemon who aren’t clones, partially because of his jealously toward them being born “naturally” and partially because he feels as if they will never accept him because he was born “different”. That being said, Mewtwo is much more inclined to have interactions with fellow Pokemon verses humans because other Pokemon are just that much easier to relate to. Friends are still something of a foreign concept for him, although the fact that he created clones like himself shows that he does have a desire for company.
After both the incident first involving Ash and the final showdown with Giovanni, Mewtwo has calmed down from his days of violent rampages. He is now more focused on being introspective as he thinks on his life and takes things one day at a time. He no longer feels as if he needs to prove to the world that he has a right to exist, but he is still at a loss as to what his purpose on this earth is. Mewtwo has a clearer picture of what is right and what is wrong after all of the things he has gone through, but he also knows that not everything is as black and white as that.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Canonically, psychic type Pokemon have a very high special attack stat, but their defense stat is poor in comparison. It makes sense that Mewtwo’s power would follow this convention, as his psychic powers are shown as being formidable, but never has he been shown to have any sort of physical prowess. His awkward, alien-like body supports the idea that physically he is very weak. Without his psychic powers Mewtwo is not capable of dealing out any sort of real damage, nor is he able to take much of a beating in return. His truth strength in battle is his superior mental abilities, which allow him to deflect attacks, generate beams or balls of psychic energy, teleport and “fly” through the air, move objects and people at will, and so on and so forth.
Mewtwo has also been shown to have an affinity for technology, as he single handedly rebuilt the lab he had been created with and later set up a complicated video surveillance system to keep his hidden home safe.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Mewtwo communicates solely through telepathically, and has never been shown to speak aloud, although he may very well be capable of speech. He is also literate, although it’s not like he has very many chances to do any reading or writing.
